Do Amish Pay Federal Taxes?

The answer is yes, even though most people believe they don’t. They pay income taxes, state and Do Amish pay federal taxes, income taxes, property taxes, and taxes such as county taxes, taxes on real estate, public school taxes, and taxes on the property. Many Amish pay school taxes twice for public and private schools. To be eligible, the Amish must complete a form. An Amish must be baptized in the Amish church to be exempt from tax. All Amish have to pay income taxes like everyone else. 

Child tax credits can also be available, amounting to up to $1000 per month for each child. Given the large Amish families, this can be quite a significant amount of money. Amish might hire an accountant to handle their income taxes, but others do it themselves.

Amish don’t pay for or receive social security. The Medicare Bill was exempted from Amish in 1965 because they considered it to be insurance. 

Amish believe that the Amish should take care of their physical and spiritual needs. High property taxes are a result of the large landholdings owned by the Amish. Due to a large number of their children, they also have high property taxes. Because Amish run their schoolhouses, they don’t have to pay property taxes. The Amish don’t receive unemployment, social security, or welfare benefits. 

This would be against their religious beliefs. They have been exempted from these payments.

1Timothy 5,8 is a bible verse that explains why they believe in not paying taxes. “But if anyone provides not for his own, especially those of his house, he denies the faith and is worse than an infidel.” Amish help one another pay their medical bills and also rebuild their homes and barns. They ask fellow church members to help if someone is unable to pay a bill.
