Family closet: real-mom organizational tips

Make your life easier with an organized closet

Published in 2014, Marie Kondo’s book The life-changing magic of tidying up was an immediate sensation, but the magic really spread to the masses last year, when eight episodes of reality series Tidying up with Marie Kondo appeared on Netflix.

The show follows Kondo as she helps american families organize their belongings, discarding massive amounts of clothes and teaching all members to fold tees, pants and even underwear in her unique way.

In theory it sounds like a great idea, yet, for working moms – that still take on the bulk of household chores and can hardly keep up with other demands of everyday life – the method of picking up each and everyone of your items isn’t as quite practical as it sounds.

However, as with everything, there are means and ways. Let go of extremely high standards and give it a try. It’s worth the effort.

Here are some organizational closet tips you can apply in your house to fall into order.

Organizing shoes inside your closet

No matter how many family members your family has, closet space for shoes is often really small. And not all wardrobes are the same. That’s why you have to be creative and find a store solution that works best for you.

In that sense, the best closet organizers can help get your footwear looking neat and tidy.

If you have some floor space, don’t forget to use it: shoe racks and cubbies can be stacked on the closet floor to make use of the space beneath hanging clothes. This is a great way to store shoes that you and your family often wear.

On the other hand, you can buy shelving models (shoe organizers) that are designed to hang on closet doors and rods – with various cubbies and drawers – eliminating piles of shoes on the floor.

How to store Underwear: the challenge of folding women’s bras

Keeping your underwear organized it’s not a difficult task and will help you to dress quickly in the morning (and dress your kids too!).

You just have to learn the best way to fold and store every item and give them a specific place.

In that sense, you must separate underwear by type (you can ask your kids to do it!): boxers, briefs, bikini, socks…and group them by colour or pattern. Then, fold them using the traditional “square method” and stack it into drawer dividers (they are inexpensive!)

When it comes to women’s bras, finding the best way to fold them could be a challenge, but it is actually pretty easy: you should fold bras one cup into the other, so cups keep their shape and take up less space.

Easy steps to organize your kids clothing

One area of the house that tends to need a lot of attention is kid’s closet.

Unlike most adults, kids are constantly growing: that’s why their closets must be full only with clothing that they are actually using and wearing.

Remember to always keep clothes where they can reach it. It’s wonderful when they learn to dress themselves and put away their laundry.

If you have more than one kid, use drawer dividers to separate their clothes. It helps keep everything in the right place and prevents possible fights between them. Those designated spaces will also help children learn how to store their clothes after laundry.

Last but not least, get your kids involved in the organization process. It’s never early to teach kids good housekeeping habits, especially if you plan to keep your house tidy permanently.

Tidying up your clothes can make you fall in love with your closet. It requires some effort, but could bring many real and measurable benefits.

Just to name a few, an organized space is easier to clean up, helps with the process of choosing the perfect outfit for every morning (it allows you to see exactly what you have), and most importantly: it makes you feel less stressed.
